Classroom Learning versus E-Learning

//

Learning is a continuous process. A person starts learning since day one & it surpasses through all the stages of life.

For e.g.

A child learns to walk, he tries to imitate the people around him. When he grows up, he learns from school teachers, Family & friends. Even an individual learns regularly at a workplace, learns how to behave in the organization, and gains some formal-informal knowledge during that time.

We know that Knowledge is Power. Everyone Seeks Knowledge, they either acquire new knowledge or they upgrade. In either way, they learn something valuable. This acquiring or upgrading knowledge is learning which is an ongoing process & depends on what one wants to learn, what one seeks to learn and lastly what one learns!

In today’s technology-led environment, Learning is just not limited to the classroom learning, wherein one has to be present in the class to acquire knowledge. Presently, Learning has scaled up to another level & has given an individual the perk of enhancing their knowledge by being present anywhere in the world. This type of learning is E-learning which takes place through different electronic media.

So be it classroom training or E-Learning, both are the formal way of learning, where the learning occurs through a structured format.

Let’s discuss what classroom training is all about.

What is classroom learning?

Classroom learning is the oldest method of learning wherein the students can see the trainer and also can ask all the pertinent questions at the time of learning. Students, in this type of learning, has an advantage of meeting their batch mates, undergo live presentation and classroom discussions.

Some of the advantages of Classroom Learning:

(1) Face to Face:

The biggest advantage of Traditional classroom training is the proximity between the instructor & students. Also, in traditional learning individual gain wider exposure to interact with a variety of people which increases their scope of information.

(2) Hands-on learning Experiences:

Students, in Off-Line training, has the privilege of having practical experience on the things taught in session.  The expeditious doubt solving is an added advantage of classroom training. It enables the participants to ask questions directly to the trainer or to the batch mates & can instantly solve the doubts.

The majority of workforce who has an inner urge to update themselves observing the market demands might use these taglines;

“Yaar meri to age ho gayi hai padhai ki, ab koi university mujhe admission nahi degi”

“I have missed the admission enrollment deadline”

“Mere pass time hi nahi hai class jaaneka”

For all the worries, there is one solution called “E-Learning”

What is E-Learning?

E-Learning – Electronic learning, is learning which takes place over the internet. It is a new way of educating individuals through computers as a medium of instruction.

It’s been more than twenty years and today E-Learning is used at schools, Universities & Organizations. Its new form wherein people educate themselves even by not being present in person. Many companies enroll their employees to take training on computers or they organize online training programs to enhance their employee’s skills.

“We need to bring learning to people instead of people to learning.” – Elliot Masie

Unlike Traditional learning where real-time presence is important, E-Learning is the easiest and accessible form of education these days. People opt for E-Learning education as it is “CONVENIENT”. It gives you the opportunity to get educated while being at home.

With the new end technology & the desire to learn at their own time, E-Learning is the boon to many people

Some of the major benefits of E-Learning are:

Flexible & Easily Accessible:

Many traditional learning courses usually happen during normal working hours, so when any employer who wants their employees to undergo any professional or developmental course, with minimal disruption in work schedule, E-Learning is the best option.  It provides participants with an Exclusive offer of Flexibility & accessibility. It frees individuals from traditional blackboard system & gives them digital training with the help of different electronic mediums.

Cost Effective & Time Saving:

In E-Learning, the materials are provided via the internet, which saves the paper cost. Also, If we deduct the time taken from the office and removing the traveling cost also, E-Learning helps you to save your time, thereby gaining proper Knowledge at your convenience.

Guarded:

E-Learning provides individuals an extended hand, so if they feel uncomfortable learning in a large group, especially if they find something hard to understand, that co-workers might have a problem with, E-Learning provides individual to tackle the subject at their own pace.

However, apart from all flexibilities in E-learning, here Internet technology is needed, also sometimes group discussions is difficult to do. The participants also have to wait for the instructor to respond, which might hamper their work.

The problem today with the students & working professional is to judge the stack up & the distinction between the two education systems. A comparison between the two education systems are as follows:

Interaction with the person sitting next to you v/s Interaction with the person:

Having interaction with the person sitting next to you may have same views regarding particular thing wherein interaction with the person sitting in another country may give you a new perspective on the topic. Also, E-Learning keeps you updated with the advancements going on around the world & also might help to find better ways of doing things

Information from one Book versus Information from Ocean:

In Classroom training, participants get information from one book only whereas in E-Learning participants has the ocean of information and can get a bundle of information sitting anywhere in the world.

Transportation & material cost versus PDA’s:

E-Learning provides high-cost benefit when compared with classroom training. Unlike Traditional training, wherein the participants, as well as trainer, have to be present there till the duration of training, E-Learning surpasses that and allows one to acquire training at their convenient time. Also, E-Learning once developed can be used a number of times giving lifetime benefits to the company and participants. In this way, eLearning costs considerably less as compared to classroom training.

Fixed Timetable versus Owned Timetable:

Unlike classroom training where the students have to follow the fixed timetable & have to be present at the time of the sessions, in E-Learning they can take their classes at their feasible time. E-learning provides multiple benefits to the working professional who have a job & social responsibilities & it helps them to undergo training and enhance their skills at their own time.

One time training sessions versus Multiple times training sessions:

In classroom training, the sessions once conducted cannot be repeated again, whereas E-Learning gives participants opportunity to view training as and when needed. Many companies conduct online training programs for their employees, where the training doesn’t get limited to that session only but it can be used for different employees for multiple times.

However, be it E-learning or Traditional Learning, there is no difference in learning just the methodology is different.

Hence in a debate between traditional learning & E-Learning, there is no clear winner. Its up to our convenience, we can choose the best one and educate ourselves just keeping in mind the “Continuous Learning” Factor. The way training is planned and delivered keeping in mind the business needs and the requirements of the learners is crucial to the success of any training program

In order to create an engaging learning experience, the role of instructor is optional, but the role of learner is essential.” – Bernard Bull
